A Photo a Week Challenge: Unexpected

This is my contribution to the A Photo a Week Challenge: Unexpected.

I’ve had a few unexpected wildlife encounters over the years but one recent encounter came to mind. A little over a year ago I was sitting on a bench at Dominion Lookout on the Lake Huron shoreline in Southampton. It was mid morning and I had a camera sitting on the bench next to me, just in case.

Imagine my surprise when I saw a Red Fox trotting along the shoreline towards me. I grabbed the camera and started taking photos as I was expecting it to spook and run off. Well it didn’t run off, it stopped briefly for a quick drink before it got close to me. It then carried on trotting along the shoreline towards me and carried on past me to disappear in some vegetation growing to the north of the lookout.

Ten minutes later it was trotting behind me heading back south. I later found out from a local I know that it was a regular along the shoreline and had learned to ignore the locals and the tourists. I saw it again a couple of months later but it wasn’t as close.

When I lived in London, I was amazed to see that foxes were roaming freely within the city proper. I guess they’re not as shy as we tend to think they are.
