This is my contribution to Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Books and Paper.
I had no idea what I was going to do for this challenge. Then I used one of the bird identification apps on my tablet to check a range map for a species.
That made me think of the shelf full of field guides and bird family reference books that are currently stored on a shelf in a closet since our move.
I picked the Dark-eyed Junco because of my Throwback Thursday post this week.

You can’t beat a lovely printed bird guide (although that app looks good).
Thanks Stuart. Despite being a photographer I much prefer illustrations rather than photos for field guides and reference books. The apps are useful but I wouldn’t rely on them for identification purposes.
I agree with that – I do have a good RSPB photoguide but I still prefer illustrations.
Having supplied photos for field guides in the past I understand that photo based field guides have their place as long as I don’t have to use them.
There’s a bit of irony there! 😀
Just a bit. One of my photos of a Red Fox in a hay meadow was used in a field guide to garden wildlife despite clearly not being in a garden.
Lol! Well maybe if you had a REALLY big garden!
Actually I put a wildflower meadow in a corner of my garden around that time but it would have to have been twenty times larger for the Fox photo.
😀
Wonderful bird books you have on display. 😀 😀
Thanks Cee. I thought it was an interesting comparison between the books and tablet.
Creative photograph. Great job.
Thank you.
