This is my contribution to the Cosmic Photo Challenge: Cosmically Circular/Cosmically Square!
I considered this challenge for some time before deciding that my interpretation was going to be round things in the sky, cropped square. Simple.
A moon. Not the moon because we now know that there are other moons out there. Some with more dramatic names, Titan or Deimos, for example. Taken from the dock at Colpoy’s Bay on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario while waiting for the sun to rise.
A manmade circle in the sky. Wiarton Village Fair fireworks on the South Bruce Peninsula. Taken with a telephoto from a couple of miles away across the bay from the dock at Colpoy’s Bay. The same location as the moon photo.
A giant setting sun behind cloud. Taken with a telephoto lens at Little Quill Lake, Saskatchewan during autumn migration. The specks in the photo are distant wildfowl flying to roost.
A really excellent interpretation. Simple but stunning.

Thanks Dale. I did consider swirling around the edges of some shots. The 25mm CCTV lens I have swirls the edges so I was thinking of adding some extra swirling but in the end went for a simpler response.

I like how you cropped the photos to get the square and then used photos of the fireworks, sun and moon all round.

Thanks Frank. I was thinking about getting a lot more complicated before deciding to simplify.

Very nice shots! They say that the moon is not really round. It is oblong like an egg, due to the earth’s gravitational pull. 🙂

Thanks Tom. That moon may be the shape a of ovoid due to the Earth’s gravitational pull but if I recall correctly the Earth is also a ovoid due to the sun’s gravitational pull. Or maybe because of that moon’s gravitational pull.

Simple works very well. Three cheers for Saturn’s new moons! There is a competition to name them but the naming rules seem pretty strict. They probably want to avoid Moony McMoonface.

Having been watching QI on YouTube I question if they’re really moons. And if they’ll still be classified as moons in the future. I don’t know how many moons the Earth has this month as it varies according to Stephen Fry.
