Weekly Prompts Photo Challenge: Bottles

This is my contribution to the Weekly Prompts Photo Challenge: Bottles.

I vaguely remembered seeing a Coca-Cola bottle on a garden shed on one of my walks testing various lenses adapted to a mirrorless camera in the summer. So I decided to go for a walk to check the shed out.

Imagine my surprise when I found a variety of bottles on the shed.

I never even thought about bottles in a shed. As there’s a deposit on beer bottles in Ontario lots of sheds get filled up with empties waiting for an opportunity to return them

Actually Saskatchewan has a far better system. They have deposits on most recyclable containers encouraging people to return everything.

When I lived in Saskatchewan in the late 1990s kids would pick up bottles and recyclable containers for the deposit. It worked well when I was living there.

You are right David. Earlier this year, an environmental report stated that 91% of plastic in Canada is dumped into the garbage and ends up in landfills and incinerators instead of being recycled.

I can believe that. I do wonder if everything we drop off at the recycling center gets recycled or if some ends up in landfills. There’s been a few TV reports about recycling being dumped in with the garbage.

At the school where I worked we carefully sorted and recycled into the appropriate bins. One day my colleague spotted the garbage truck and watched all the bins being emptied into the one truck with no separation!

I’m not sure if publicity helps. I remember the huge Canadian coffee shop chain Tim Hortons getting caught dumping their recyclable coffee cups repeatedly. The bad publicity didn’t seem to have any negative impact on them.
