This is my contribution to the Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Monochrome.
I hadn’t come up with an idea for this challenge when I headed down to Colpoy’s Bay for the sunrise on Sunday morning. With some interesting clouds over Colpoy’s Bay and the Niagara Escarpment I was hoping for some colour at sunrise. No colour ever developed so I started thinking about some monochrome conversions for the challenge.
I had taken my lightweight kit of a small mirrorless camera and three manual focus prime lenses. So I tried to make a set of three images, one with each lens.
A view of the bay with the wide angle lens.
A section of the shoreline and bay with the standard lens.
Isolating a section of clouds over the Niagara Escarpment with the telephoto lens.

A great idea to make lemonade out of lemons😊. The comparison is really interesting and the images are lovely. Nicely done
Thanks Tina. I was lucky that the idea for the post came to me soon after I got down to the shoreline so I had time to get the shots as we started getting ice pellets while I was still set up.

Great photos. Well done.
Thanks John.
Great photos chosen – beautifully done.
Thanks Leya. It was an interesting exercise in composition using the different lenses.
Really interesting to see the same landscape photographed with different lenses. Monochrome lends itself nicely to these moody skies. ❤
Thanks Olga. We seem to have had a lot of moody skies recently.
Great black and white images! Thank you for showing us the differences among these lenses.
Thanks Amy. I did a similar colour post using each of the lenses a while ago. It’s something I may make an effort to do in the future.
Ice pellets! Already! Winter is upon us so soon. I love your creative idea for the challenge, David. I love the how you shoot the scene with 3 lenses. Great idea and great results. The depth and complexity of the clouds in your last shot are fantastic. I love the sense of moodiness and drama in these shots.
Thanks Patti. It was an interesting challenge once I came up with the idea down on the Colpoy’s Bay shoreline. It’s something I may do again.
It’s a great idea.
