Winter Visitor

Throwback Thursday travels back to Cheshire, England in the 1980s.

Each winter two species of Thrush visit the U.K. Fieldfare and Redwing arrive in the U.K. from northern Europe. Often traveling in flocks the first sighting each autumn is seen by some people as a sign that winter is on its way.

This is a Fieldfare and this individual had found a good food supply. It’s taken up residence in an abandoned orchard where there are lots of windfall apples in the grass.

Throwback Thursday: Fieldfare

Thank you. We don’t get Redwing and Fieldfare in Canada. Our winter visitors are Finches and other seed eaters from northern Canada. Numbers vary greatly from year to year so we may not see many, or indeed any, this winter.
