The prompt for the A Photo a Week Challenge: Glass was rather well timed for me. I had been photographing part cups of coffee and a variety of other glass objects a month or so ago. Then I thought about what some photographer’s refer to as glass.
A partially drunk cup of coffee. I used a gold reflector to bounce some of the light back onto the glass.
Detail of a drinking glass illuminated with a mix of natural and artificial light.
What some photographer’s refer to as their glass.
A photographer’s broken glass.

A photographer’s Glass indeed! My Glass isn’t nearly so impressive, but then I’ve only been collecting glass for about a year. 😉
Two of them date back to the 1970s and there’s quite a few from the 1980s.
How often do you use the older ones? Are they the workhorses of the bunch, or do you use the newer ones more often?
They all have different characteristics. Some of the early ones have very basic anti reflection coatings compared to modern lenses. Also, lenses designed for digital cameras have different characteristics to lenses designed for film as the sensor in a digital camera works better if the light is hitting it at right angles. The lens with the grey focusing collar is a favourite but I picked it up used in the late 1970s so it’s now so worn I keep expecting it to fall apart each time I use it.
Long may it live!
