This is my contribution to the Cosmic Photo Challenge: Forces of Nature.
I had a couple of ideas for the challenge and was thinking about some of the winters in Canada. So I decided to go with a small selection of winter photos.
Ice thick enough to drive on. A section of frozen marsh at Little Quill Lake in Saskatchewan, Canada at dusk. It was -40° when the photo was taken. -40° is the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit.
Snow storm. This snow fell in a couple of hours on a Christmas Day morning. Taken on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario, Canada, there was another 4 inches of snow during the rest of the day.
Frazil ice on Lake Huron. What looks like water in the foreground is frazil ice. When it is cold enough to start freezing water but wave action stops the water freezing solid frazil ice forms. Think of it as a thick, slushy ice.

Really nice contrasting images, David, nicely done
Thanks Dale. Some of the winter forces of nature are more memorable apart from the tornado I slept through in Saskatchewan.
Ah, another heavy sleeper. I slept through a hurricane in 1987 (although it was later known simply as The Great Storm) which seriously devastated Ashdown Forest, where I grew up.

I’ve slept through a few storms. A thunderstorm in north London in the mid 1980s was rattling the windows. My partner at the time had to kick me awake as she was getting nervous about the storm. Apparently I woke up briefly, said ‘oh it’s thundering’ and went back to sleep. I was in the dog house for a few days over that one.
My wife is the opposite, she complains that we don’t get “proper storms” over here, like she’s used to back in the States.
All three stunning, David! The Snow Storm is the most unusual, though – you rarely post snow shots. This on is really lovely.
Thanks Hannah. I post a few snow shots in the winter but mostly detail shots, shadows or autumn leaves on the snow rather than scenic type shots.
So much beauty in the world
Even at -40°
That’s why I am content to enjoy it through your lens!
😀
Chilean work. lol
