This is my contribution to the One Word Sunday prompt Arch.
This is the Old Dee Bridge at Chester, Cheshire, England, the oldest bridge in the city.
The Romans built the first bridge at this site. It’s thought this bridge dates back to some time between 1357 and 1367. It’s built of local red sandstone and has seven arches, all of which are different dimensions.

A beauty, David. And still standing solid
Thanks Debbie. Quite impressive really, especially considering that the River Dee is tidal at that point.
The Romans were quite the builders, combining long-lasting function with beauty as this shot shows so well.

The city of Chester started life as a Roman fort.
It’s certainly mentioned in at least one of Rosemary Sutcliff’s books about Roman Britain, books I love and am currently re-reading.
My home town of Nantwich in southern Cheshire started out as a Roman settlement producing salt for the Roman garrison at Chester and the garrison at Stoke-on-Trent.
