Male Purple Finch

My Saturday Bird this week is the Purple Finch (Haemorhous purpureus), in this case a male.

Despite the common English name adult males are raspberry red. I suggested in a blog post years ago that they should be renamed Raspberry Red Finch. Rather amusingly I see that the current Wikipedia entry for the species describes them as being raspberry red.

This individual was photographed on the South Bruce Peninsula in early spring. Despite being classed as year round residents in this part of Ontario numbers vary from year to year with very few records some years.
