Month of Squares

Past Squares #23

Riding Up A Mountain

Motorcycles in fog on their way to the Dragon Motorcycle Rally in Snowdonia, North Wales. A photo from the very early 1980s when I was a field tester for Ilford XP1, a new type of black and white film.

A look back at some of my personal favorite square photos from previous months of squares. Some were popular, some not so popular at the time.

This was a post in Up Squares Month and is my day 23 contribution to Becky’s October Squares on the theme of Past Squares.

Glad you liked it. The film was touted as being grain free when launched but I never found it any less grainy than conventional black and white film. I suspect that my digital conversion of the original negative may have increased the grain. The other possibility is that the negatives have deteriorated with age. They were almost 40 years old when I digitised them. And being a new type of film no one really knew what the film would be like decades later. I do know that they’re a strange pink colour now.

Exactly. Having studied photography in the film era I associate black and white with film grain. Sometimes digital files are just too “clean” for the mood of the image.
