The Weaver Navigation

This is my contribution to Cee’s Midweek Madness Challenge: Pick a Topic from my Photo.

This month Cee posted a photo of a river with some old industrial buildings on the far side of the river.

This is Hunt’s Locks on a section of the Weaver Navigation with the Weaver Railway Viaduct behind at Northwich, Cheshire England. The Weaver Navigation is a stretch of the river made navigable for boats. The locks are used to raise and lower boats between different levels of the river. Although the scene looks very industrial, in reality it was mostly residential property in the area.

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Twist

This is my contribution to the Tuesday Photo Challenge – Twist prompt.

I had a few ideas for the prompt and even edited photos of two species of snakes before heading off in a different direction.

An adult Eurasian Blue Tit twists to feed the young while the young twist to try to get the food. The young are almost fully grown at this stage meaning that the adults often cling to the entrance hole to feed them.

2020: Natural Detail

This is my contribution to the Friendly Friday Challenge Review 2020.

I decided to go with the theme of details of the natural world. A small selection of photos from 2020.

Silent Sunday: 3rd May 2020

The green moss and orange lichen on a limestone boulder caught my eye on a walk in the spring.

CBWC: Hosta Leaves Detail

Early summer saw me experimenting with the monochrome options on a mirrorless camera. Variegated Hosta leaves in monochrome.

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Negative Space

Summer also saw me experimenting with photographing flowers and plants with various unusual lenses. A Coneflower photographed with a fast portrait lens wide open.

A sign of autumn.

Late summer saw the leaves starting to change colour. This solitary orange Maple leaf caught my eye when I was walking past it.

Jujubes

This is my contribution to Cee’s Midweek Madness Challenge: January Close Up or Macro.

Jujubes (or Ju-jubes or JuJubes, take your pick) photographed with a cheap 35mm CCTV lens adapted to a mirrorless rather than a macro lens. An experiment that didn’t really work out as expected. The lens doesn’t seem to produce the swirly, streaking corners and edges when close focused.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

This is my contribution to Cee’s Midweek Madness Challenge: Word that contains the letter U prompt.

I decided to go with a natural history theme and had a few ideas for the challenge before thinking of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

As this bird doesn’t have a ruby coloured throat it’s a female. Given how smart the birds plumage is I suspect that it’s a juvenile female hatched from an egg earlier in the summer. It was photographed on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario in August.
