Interior

This is my contribution to the One Word Sunday prompt Interior.

This is part of a ward in a former small pox hospital in South East England. I documented the buildings prior to the site being cleared for redevelopment.

Abandoned crofters cottage

This is my contribution to Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Decayed or Rusty.

When I read the prompt I thought of a favourite photo that would work well for the prompt. An abandoned crofters cottage on the Isle of Skye I photographed 40 years ago.

The problem was I only had a low quality digital version, a copy of a slide that was a copy of a print from the negative. I had gone through my negative files twice without finding the original negative. So I went through the files a third time, determined to find the negative which I eventually did.

Friendly Friday: Rails

This is my contribution to the Friendly Friday Photo Challenge: Rails.

I had a couple of ideas for the challenge before realising that I had photographed a variety of rails in the local town last year.

Three very different rails from around the town of Wiarton on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario.

The rails on the front of this abandoned grocery store used to hold the Foodland sign.

Inhospitable Picnic Tables

When I read the prompt for Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Tables, Chairs, Picnic Tables I remembered a couple of picnic tables and some benches on the Colpoy’s Bay shoreline. As I had to go into town I made a short detour to get some photos of them.

The flood water had dropped a few inches before it froze and I took the photo.

This picnic table was mostly buried in snow and ice until recently. All the rocks around the picnic table and in the snow were thrown there by waves before the shoreline was covered in snow.

These two benches and two more out of shot are less inhospitable than they were last year. Then the water level in Colpoy’s Bay was so high they were effectively on an island and only way to get to them was by wading through the water.

After writing this post I remembered this inhospitable bench I photographed last autumn. Outside the entrance to the abandoned grocery store in Wiarton on the South Bruce Peninsula, the bench is surrounded by Private Property, No Trespassing signs. As if anyone would want to sit down and view the parking lot from it.

On the Hunt for Joy: Count Chimneys

This is my contribution to Cee’s On the Hunt for Joy Challenge: Count Chimneys.

Over Christmas I started making digital versions of the slides in my archives. I had previously digitised around 1,500 key slides but there are about 15,000 in my archives. I am currently about halfway through the process.

So a selection of English chimneys photographed in the 1980s from my archives.

An interesting old stone chimney on the corner of Eastgate Street and Bridge Street in the historic centre of Chester, Cheshire.

Some chimneys in north London during a severe hailstorm. The “speckled” appearance of the storm clouds is falling hail.

Derelict Doors and Drawers

This is my contribution to Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Doors and Drawers.

This is part of a ward in a former small pox hospital. I documented the buildings before they were demolished and the site cleared to make way for new medical research establishments.

After doing the monochrome conversion I added some film grain, a vignette and some blurring to the corners before adding a film type border to make the shot look as old as the building.
