Belt of Venus around Lake Huron

Throwback Thursday travels back 13 years to September 2007.

This is Lake Huron with Chantry Island on the horizon shortly before sunrise. The band of colour just above the horizon is known as the Belt of Venus. It is an atmospheric phenomenon sometimes visible shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset.

Lake Huron at Dawn

Throwback Thursday travels back to 2003 and an atmospheric phenomenon at dawn.

Visible shortly before sunrise and shortly after sunset the Belt of Venus is a pinkish band above the horizon. It is produced when light from the sun is backscattered by particulates in the air.

In this photo of Lake Huron with Chantry Island on the horizon the blue band directly above the horizon is the earth’s shadow with the Belt of Venus above that.
