Flora and Fauna Friday

Borage flower and buds

My Flora and Fauna Friday post this week is a Borage (Borago officinalis) flower and buds. An alternative common English name is Starflower.

A popular cottage garden plant it is now being grown commercially to produce Borage Seed Oil. This specimen was photographed in a garden in Nantwich, Cheshire, England.

Throwback Thursday

Oriental Poppy flower bud.

Throwback Thursday travels back to Cheshire in the mid 1980s. At the time I was experimenting with a variety of techniques photographing nature subjects.

One of the techniques involved using slower shutter speeds to show some movement in the subjects. This Oriental Poppy flower bud was one of my favourites from my experiments with the technique. I like the hint of sharpness on some of the hairs on the bud and the splash of red where the flowers petals are starting to show.

Photo Challenges

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Outdoors

This is my contribution to the Tuesday Photo Challenge: Outdoors.

As someone who is primarily an outdoor photographer I had plenty of photos to pick from but I needed a theme to follow. So I decided to go with as wide a variety of subject matter as possible and to start in the 1970s and end this summer.

One of my earliest photos. The negative for the first version got lost or damaged so I reshot the scene next time there was snow. Trees in snow, Hatherton, Cheshire, England in the mid 1970s.
