Past Squares #28

January Squares: Headlight

January Squares: Headlight

Team Bike entering the start/finish straight shortly before midnight during the Le Mans 24 motorcycle endurance race in April 1982.

A look back at some of my personal favorite square photos from previous months of squares. Some were popular, some not so popular at the time.

This was a post in Words containing Light Squares Month and is my day 28 contribution to Becky’s October Squares on the theme of Past Squares.

Quattro

Or Audi Quattro if you prefer, both work for the prompt.

This is my contribution to Cee’s Midweek Madness Challenge: October Alphabet, must have Q or U in the word prompt.

Motion and Movement

This is my contribution to Ann-Christine’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Weird and Wonderful prompt.

I had a few ideas for the challenge before realising that two of them involved motion blur and intentional camera movement.

So I decided to go with a small selection of motion blur and intentional camera movement shots.

One Word Sunday: Count

Intentional camera movement of trees on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario.

Mobile

I had a few ideas for Debbie’s One Word Sunday: Mobile prompt.

I forgot those ideas when I remembered that it’s the Le Mans 24 hour motorcycle endurance race in France this weekend.

So a trip to the archives for a photo of Team Bike entering the start/finish straight shortly before midnight during the 1982 Le Mans 24 hour motorcycle endurance race.

Catching People Unaware

This is my contribution to Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Catching People Unaware prompt.

I had a couple of ideas for the challenge before thinking of my photo of the track invasion at the end of the Le Mans 24 hour motorcycle race. I edited all the digital copies of the slides recently which is probably why it came to mind.

Being ignored by Team Bike and the French race officials during a dawn pit stop.

Audi Sport

Or Motorsports. Or simply RS.

This is my contribution to Cee’s Midweek Madness Challenge: Word that contains R and S prompt.

On reading the prompt I thought of the initials RS, sometimes used by car makers to designate a sporting version of a car. It stands for Rally Sport, Rallye Sport or RennSport (racing sport) depending on the manufacturer.

That started me thinking about motorsports and rallying in particular. Which is how I got to the Audi Sport logo on the side of this Audi Quattro.

Friendly Friday: Nostalgia

This is my contribution to the Friendly Friday Challenge: Nostalgia.

I’m going to take a sideways look at this challenge with a post partly about nostalgia and partly about camera equipment.

It’s now 40 years since I left art school after studying photography. In those 40 years there has been huge advances in equipment and techniques.

Sometimes I will look back at shots in my film archives and consider how much easier some of the shots would be to get today. Or I will be aware of how much better the quality of the images would be compared to the film stocks available when the shots were taken.

So this post is about looking back at some favourite photos and considering how some of my photos could be improved with modern equipment or techniques. As an interesting aside, after writing the post I realised that all the images have been published in a book or magazine despite their faults.

Tuesday Photo Challenge - Number

In the late 1970s and early 1980s I was photographing a variety of motorsports. In those days 200 ISO was the highest colour film speed a lot of editors would accept. One of my current mirrorless cameras has a base of 200 ISO. Also, lenses are faster with better anti-reflection coatings.

Weekly Prompts: Story

Nowadays I would build a LED panel into the top of the nestbox for more even, diffused light.

One Word Sunday: Drama

Nowadays there are techniques for dealing with high contrast lighting like this. I can take multiple exposures and combine them to keep detail in the highlights and open up the shadows.
