Catching People Unaware

This is my contribution to Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Catching People Unaware prompt.

I had a couple of ideas for the challenge before thinking of my photo of the track invasion at the end of the Le Mans 24 hour motorcycle race. I edited all the digital copies of the slides recently which is probably why it came to mind.

Flare

And Flair.

This is my contribution to the One Word Sunday challenge Flare or Flair.

Having shot a few photos of sun shining through trees with deliberate flare on some of my recent walks around the neighborhood I then decided to go in a completely different direction. So here’s a visit to the Le Mans race circuit in France for the 24 hour motorcycle endurance race in the spring of 1982.

The flare in this photo is created by the lights illuminating the pit lane entrance and the start/finish straight at the race circuit. The photo was taken with the silvernose OM Zuiko 50mm that I got with my Olympus OM1 in 1976. Those lenses were single coated rather than multi coated which probably explains the flare.

The flair in this photo is the motorcycle and rider. Built on a shoestring budget in a garage in London this is the bikes first race. It looks like a standard Honda CB900 rather than a purpose built endurance racer. Despite all that the team was up to 8th in the race at one point, ahead of some of the big budget professional teams.

January Squares: Inspection-light

This is day 26 and the last Sunday of Becky’s January Squares: Light photo challenge so I’m going with a shot taken in the early hours of a Sunday morning.

This is a Team Bike pit stop at around 3 o’clock in the morning. One of the pit crew is using an inspection light to check the oil level in the engine while a French official uses a torch (flashlight) to make sure the British are following the rules to the letter. I’m using inspection light although they’re known as a trouble light in Canada.

January Squares: 11:10 p.m. Taillights

This is my Saturday, day 18 contribution to Becky’s January Squares: Light photo challenge.

I picked this photo because it was taken at 11:10 p.m. on a Saturday night according to the giant clock at the end of the pit lane. Two taillights heading up the start/finish straight at the Le Mans race circuit during a 24 hour motorcycle race. The race started at 3:00 p.m. so just over eight hours, or one third of the race down.

January Squares: Headlight

This is my day four post for Becky’s January Squares: Light photo challenge.

A rider enters the start/finish straight at around midnight during the Le Mans 24 hour motorcycle race in 1982. Even in those days most endurance race bikes ran twin headlights but this machine is competing in the silhouette class where the race bike has to have the same silhouette as the production machine it’s based on. So a single headlight and only minor modifications allowed.

Nine hours down, fifteen to go.

Night Hours

The new Tuesday Photo Challenge is Night.

I had a few ideas for the challenge before thinking of some of my motorcycle endurance racing shots taken in the middle of the night. This set is from the 1982 Le Mans 24 hour motorcycle race in France. Most of the shots feature Team Bike, the team I was there to cover.
