Common Frogs mating

My Flora and Fauna Friday post this week is a continuation of last week’s post of a male Common Frog (Rana temporaria) croaking to attract a mate.

This week a pair of Common Frogs are mating in a garden pond at Hatherton near Nantwich in southern Cheshire, England. This is known as amplexus, males develop nuptial pads to help them clasp the female. This allows them to kick away rival males.

CFFC: Summer Scenes

This is my contribution to Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Summer Scenes.

The first image that came to mind wasn’t really a “scene” in the sense of a landscape. It was more to do with the memory of a hot summer day and sitting in the water with a large group of American White Pelicans. They were fishing in a channel where a marsh drained into a section of the Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Six Word Saturday

The Santa Claus Parade Street Walkers

Normally I restrict my Six Word Saturday posts to one or two six word sentences but this one is going to need an explanation.

Last Saturday evening it was the Wiarton Santa Claus parade on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario, Canada. Just up the street from me someone was doing a commentary using a public address system. When the people with the BDO banners passed the commentator I heard them say “and here’s the LBDO street walkers” at which point there was a brief pause before they added “I probably shouldn’t have phrased it like that” which was what I was thinking.

Light beam on hillside

A telephoto landscape from the archives. Taken in the autumn of 1985 which makes me realise just how long I have been using long telephoto lenses to isolate sections of the landscape.

I was photographing storm clouds over Loch Arkaig, Lochaber, Scotland in the evening. I noticed that a light beam from the low sun was illuminating a section of a hillside and quickly swapped to my 300mm for this shot.
