Past Squares #13

January Squares: Up #8

January Squares: Up #8

Fishing in the mist at sun Up.

Photographed from the Government Dock in the village of Colpoy’s Bay on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario shortly after sunrise in summer.

A look back at some of my personal favorite square photos from previous months of squares. Some were popular, some not so popular at the time.

This was a post in Up Squares Month and is my day 13 contribution to Becky’s October Squares on the theme of Past Squares.

As Summer Fades

Two signs of summer coming to an end on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario yesterday morning.

This is my contribution to Dale’s Cosmic Photo Challenge: As Summer Fades prompt.

Light trails from fishing boats on Colpoy’s Bay at dawn. Most of the fishing boats on the bay are probably competing in an annual end of summer fishing derby.

The sun rising over the Niagara Escarpment on the other side of Colpoy’s Bay. Around the summer solstice the sun rises over the mouth of the bay. As the days shorten and autumn approaches the sun starts rising progressively more to the south.

Throwback Thursday

Fishing off the Dock

Throwback Thursday travels back 12 years this week.

A couple of people fishing from the end of the dock at the mouth of the Saugeen River on the Lake Huron shoreline in Southampton, Ontario.

What’s interesting about this shot is that since it was taken the water level in Lake Huron has increased quite dramatically. The stony patch of shoreline in the foreground is now under water.

Good Catch

An American White Pelican with a large fish in its pouch. One from the archives, photographed on Last Mountain Lake, Saskatchewan in the late 1990s.

This part of Ontario is under a heat warning at the moment which got me thinking about photography in hot weather. That made me think of a hot afternoon in Saskatchewan when I set up a tripod in a channel where a marsh drains into a section of Last Mountain Lake. I sat in the water behind the camera. There was a group of American White Pelicans fishing in the channel. They would swim in the direction of the water flow before flying back to the start of the channel and repeating the fishing expedition.

This breeding adult looks a bit grumpy despite the size of the fish it has caught.
