Weekend Challenge: Story

This is my contribution to the Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge: Story.

I thought of the story of a pair of Eurasian Blue Tits nesting in a nestbox in Cheshire. In 1987 I documented the complete nesting cycle of a pair of Eurasian Blue Tits using a specially constructed nestbox built into a garden shed in a Hatherton garden.

Having digitised all the nestbox slides last winter I had lots of photos to pick from so I decided to limit myself to four photos illustrating key points of the nesting cycle.

Speciality

On reading the prompt for One Word Sunday: Speciality I had a couple of ideas for a post.

In the end I went with a specially designed nestbox and electronic flash that allowed me to document the nesting cycle of various bird species that use nestboxes. This meant that I could observe and record some interesting behaviour.

One Word Sunday: Speciality

In this photo one of the adult Eurasian Blue Tits, I’d say that it’s the female, brings in some moss for the nest. The way the nest is being built shows that one adult has a preference for moss while the other has a preference for dry grass.

One Word Sunday: Speciality

In this photo the male is feeding the female during incubation. Observation showed that the male always stood on the right side of the nest when feeding the female and the young when they were small.

Friendly Friday: Construction

This is my contribution to the Friendly Friday Photo Challenge: Construction.

After considering construction in the human world I took a change of direction and started thinking about some of the construction in the animal kingdom.

Here is an adult Great Tit using Moss to construct its nest.

Lining the nest.

The nest is nearly finished. One of the final stages is lining it with soft material. This is normally items such as feathers, hair and wool.

In this photo one of the adult Eurasian Blue Tits is adding lining to the nest.

Some moss for the nest.

The nest is nearly finished. One of the Eurasian Blue Tits brings some moss in for the nest.

I find this photo interesting, as you can see, one side of the nest consists mostly of moss. The other side is mostly dry grass. This makes me think that one adult preferred moss and built one side while the other preferred dry grass.

I suspect that it is the female entering with the moss. My theory for this will be explained in future photos.

The Daily Post

Just started.

The Daily Post one-word prompt is Inchoate.

An adult Great Tit drops into a nestbox with some moss at the start of nest building.

I am already posting about a pair of Eurasian Blue Tit nesting so I thought I would change species for the one-word prompt.

Some dry grass for the nest.

The pace of nest building is slowly picking up. Here one of the birds, possibly the male, is bringing some dry grass for the nest.
