April Squares: Skating on Top of the Water

This is my day five contribution to Becky’s April Squares: Top photo challenge.

Quick note. We have lost our internet connection again and I’m using the cell phone as a WiFi hotspot to post and let people know.

I went with this for day five after using a group of Mallard ducks resting on ice for day four. I thought a pair of Pond Skaters mating on the surface of the water was a nice contrast to ducks resting on ice.

Common Frogs in Monochrome

This is my contribution to Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Items with two M’s.

I was considering two photos for the challenge and rather than pick one decided to go with both. So I suppose that’s 4 M’s, or 6 if you count the two M’s in monochrome.

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Common

This is my contribution to the Tuesday Photo Challenge – Common.

My first thought was of the various species of flora and fauna with Common in their common English names.

Throwback Thursday

Mating Common Pond Skaters.

Throwback Thursday travels back to Cheshire, England in the late 1980s.

I had put in a garden pond specifically for wildlife and the photographic opportunities it would provide. One of the first species to colonise the pond was the Common Pond Skater (Gerris lacustris). I photographed this mating pair as they rested on the edge of a water lily leaf.

Eye of Frog

I know that the title sounds like part of a recipe being prepared in a cauldron to put a spell on someone but the latest Wits End Weekly Photo Challenge is Eyes so the title was to hard to resist.

Hiding in the Pondweed.

A Common Frog amongst Pondweed in a garden pond.

Throwback Thursday travels back to Cheshire, England in the late 1980s. The pond was constructed for wildlife and within a year Common Frogs were spawning in it and there was a variety of insects living on or in the water. Some of the Common Frogs got so used to people they would stay on the surface of the pond rather than diving under the water.
