Past Squares #23

Monochrome Monday: 25th January 2021

Riding Up A Mountain

Motorcycles in fog on their way to the Dragon Motorcycle Rally in Snowdonia, North Wales. A photo from the very early 1980s when I was a field tester for Ilford XP1, a new type of black and white film.

A look back at some of my personal favorite square photos from previous months of squares. Some were popular, some not so popular at the time.

This was a post in Up Squares Month and is my day 23 contribution to Becky’s October Squares on the theme of Past Squares.

October Squares: Seven of a Kind

Seven Of A Kind

Seven young Great Tits in a specially constructed nestbox at Faddiley near Nantwich in southern Cheshire, England.

I spent a week looking at this photo on the contents page of the Radio Times without recognising it as one of mine.

Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird

CMMC: Contains the letter U

An immature male Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario. A popular summer visitor to Ontario with their arrival a sign that summer is close.

My Flora and Fauna Friday post this week was chosen because it won’t be long before the Hummingbirds will be heading south for the winter.

I selected this photo of the species because it’s a personal favourite which was also published in a calendar. I’m say it’s an immature male because there appears to be some darker flecks in the feathers on the birds throat. That will be the ruby feathers starting to appear.

It’s also a slightly late contribution to Cee’s Midweek Madness Challenge: August Alphabet must have two M’s in the word prompt.

The eggs have hatched

My Throwback Thursday post this week is returning to the nesting cycle of a pair of Eurasian Blue Tit I documented in 1987.

The eggs have hatched and both adults are busy feeding hungry young.

Feeding during incubation

My Throwback Thursday post this week is returning to the story of the nesting cycle of a pair of Eurasian Blue Tit I documented in 1987.

The eggs are laid and the female has started incubating them. Here the male is feeding the female during incubation.
