Monochrome Motorsports

This is my contribution to Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Letter R.

I thought the two R in motorsports was a start. Then I found a couple of photos with more letter R in the captions.

CFFC: Sense of Smelling

This is my contribution to Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Sense of Smelling.

I was stuck for an idea for the prompt until remembering a comment someone made on Facebook after I had posted a photo of a moto cross bike from the 1970s. The comment was about the distinctive smell from a lot of racing engine’s in those days.

It was the smell of Castrol R, an oil that contained a percentage of Castor seed oil giving a very distinctive smell to the exhaust fumes.

A couple of photos from my local moto cross circuit in the late 1970s, Hatherton near Nantwich in southern Cheshire.

April Squares: On Top of the Hill

This is my day eight contribution to Becky’s April Squares: Top photo challenge and probably the oldest photo I will post for April Squares.

Two competitors crest the top of a hill in a race. Photographed at the moto cross track in Hatherton, Cheshire in the late 1970s. Except in those days it was known as scrambling.

Monochrome Wheels

This is my contribution to Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Wheels.

Having started digitising my slide archives I am planning on digitising my black and white negatives once the slides are finished. I copied a dozen or so black and white negatives as a test and of those about half were motorsports. Which worked out rather well for Cee’s challenge.

Moto cross or scrambling as it was known as in the 1970s when the photo was taken. In those days there was a rope protecting the spectators.

View From the Side

The new Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge is View From the Side.

I had a few ideas for the challenge including some of the motorsports I have photographed. Then I remembered this shot from the late 1970s. Originally shot in monochrome as I was shooting scrambling (now called Moto X) for the local newspaper.

Throwback Thursday

Scrambling or Moto X?

It’s Throwback Thursday and as the photo was taken in the late 1970s is was called Scrambling, not Moto X in those days.

It’s also a throwback in other ways. Note the protective gear the rider is wearing, boots, gloves, helmet, goggles and face guard. Compare that to all the body armour worn by Moto X competitors these days.

Another throwback is the camera technology. Film of course but in those days manual focus and manual exposure. A rare colour image as I shot mostly black and white for the local newspaper.
