Past Squares #17

Two of a Kind: American Avocets

Two Of A Kind

Two summer plumage American Avocets feeding on a slough near Punnichy, Saskatchewan. Although the photo is as much about the ripples as the birds.

Plus I’ve always liked the two drops of water falling from the males bill. I say it’s a male because the bill is straighter than the bird in the background. The more curved bill means that the background bird is a female.

A look back at some of my personal favorite square photos from previous months of squares. Some were popular, some not so popular at the time.

This was a post in Kind Squares Month and is my day 17 contribution to Becky’s October Squares on the theme of Past Squares.

Wide Open Spaces

This is my contribution to the Cosmic Photo Challenge: In the big wide open spaces prompt.

I was considering a couple of approaches to the prompt before realising that there was one obvious choice, Saskatchewan, Canada.

The Cold Light of Dawn

This is my contribution to the Cosmic Photo Challenge: The cold light of day prompt.

Being a morning person and as dawn and sunrise is frequently the coldest part of the day I decided to go with a small selection of photos taken at dawn in winter and featuring ice or snow.

One Word Sunday: Ice
Frozen and partially snow covered slough with a weak sun pillar at dawn. Photographed near Punnichy, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Second Time Around
Ice on Colpoy’s Bay at dawn with clouds over the Niagara Escarpment on the South Bruce Peninsula, Ontario, Canada.

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: A Quiet Moment

This is my contribution to the Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: A Quiet Moment.

Cee's Fun Foto Challenge: Winter

Chantry Island lighthouse at sunset in the winter. No one else was down on the Lake Huron shoreline in Southampton, Ontario given the weather and knee deep snow.

One Word Sunday: Ice

A frozen and partially snow covered slough at sunrise with a weak sun pillar. Photographed on a quiet gravel road near Punnichy, Saskatchewan.

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Delicate Colours

A mist shrouded Colpoy’s Bay at dawn. I was the only person down at that section of the Colpoy’s Bay, Ontario shoreline.

CFFC: Sense of Touching

This is my contribution to Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Sense of Touching.

The first thing that came to mind when I read the prompt was of some wader (shorebird) species that use their bills to find food in water, sand or mud.

Cosmic Photo Challenge: Through an Opening

American Avocets feeding on a slough near Punnichy, Saskatchewan. The sense of touch in use here is when the birds sweep their slightly open bills through the water feeling for anything edible.

Cee's Fun Foto Challenge: Letter K

An immature Red Knot feeding on the Lake Huron shoreline in Southampton, Ontario on its autumn migration. The bird is using the sense of touch in its bill to probe for food in the sand under the rocks on the shoreline.

Feeding Marbled Godwit.

A Marbled Godwit feeding in a marsh between Little Quill Lake and Middle Quill Lake, Saskatchewan. The bird is using the sense of touch in its bill to probe the mud for worms and anything else edible.

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Reflections

This is my contribution to the Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Reflections.

I was considering my post early on Sunday morning when I was down at the Colpoy’s Bay shoreline for the sunrise photographing the colour reflected in the bay. The first two reflections that came to mind were both from Saskatchewan in the late 1990s so I decided to add a third photo from around the village of Punnichy.
