At Night

This is my contribution to the Cosmic Photo Challenge: At Night prompt.

To be honest I wasn’t sure what I was going to go with for this challenge. I didn’t realise just how many photos I had taken at night until I started selecting photos.

Travel Tuesday: Colpoy's Bay at night
Star trails over Colpoy’s Bay at night. Taken while looking for Comet Neowise which I failed to see let alone photograph.
On Top of a Sandstone Crag by Starlight
A very long exposure of Beeston Castle at night. Taken while doing a night shift protecting a Peregrine nest site on the cliff below the castle.
Friendly Friday: Nighttime
Wybunbury churchyard at night, Cheshire, England. Taken for an art school project although I no longer remember what the brief was.
Tuesday Photo Challenge - Number
Team Bike entering the start/finish straight at around midnight. 9 hours into the Le Mans 24 hour motorcycle endurance race in France.

Eurasian Siskin

This week my Saturday Bird is the Eurasian Siskin (Spinus spinus). Other common English names include European Siskin, Common Siskin or just Siskin.

The Eurasian Siskin is common throughout Europe and Eurosiberia. It is a member of the finch family and is related to the American Goldfinch and Pine Siskin found in North America.

This is a male feeding on peanuts in a garden in southern Cheshire, England. This photo was published in a U.K. bird watching magazine despite me having submitted photos of the species in natural settings.

Haymoor Green Rd

Travel Tuesday is traveling back to southern Cheshire in the mid 1980s.

If I saw a red post box in nice light I would stop and take a few photos for one of the photo agencies I was contracted to. Red post boxes are regarded as a British cultural icon and as a result book and magazine editors are frequently looking for photos of them.

This is the post box on the junction of Wybunbury Lane and Haymoor Green Road near Nantwich in southern Cheshire, England.

Small Copper Butterfly

My Flora and Fauna Friday this week is the Small Copper Butterfly (Lycaena phlaeas).

Alternative common English names include American Copper and Common Copper.

I didn’t realise until recently that the Small Copper butterflies I had photographed in England were the same species as the ones that I have seen in Ontario, Canada.

The butterfly is a Holarctic species, widespread and common across Europe, Asia, North America and also North Africa.

This backlit individual was photographed in a garden in the village of Wybunbury in southern Cheshire, England.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Light and Dark

This is my contribution to the A Photo a Week Challenge: Light and Dark.

The prompt got me thinking about some of the nighttime photos from my film archives that I started digitising last winter.

Friendly Friday: Nighttime

This is my contribution to the Friendly Friday Photo Challenge: Nighttime.

I decided to go with a random selection of nighttime photos covering over 40 years.

A Photo a Week Challenge: Light the Night

Moonrise through an Oak tree in Hatherton, Cheshire. I’m not sure when this photo was taken, it’s possible that I was still in high school.

Friendly Friday: Nighttime

Stars over Colpoy’s Bay and the Niagara Escarpment a month ago. I forgot to change the alarm when the clocks went ahead in the spring so was down on the shoreline an hour and a half before sunrise.

Cosmic Photo Challenge: Night

This is my contribution to the Cosmic Photo Challenge: Night.

I had a few ideas for the challenge before deciding to go simple, the prompt is night so photos taken at night. I then decided on only two photos taken about 40 years apart.

Inside a graveyard at night, Wybunbury, Cheshire, England. Taken in the late 1970s when I was a photography student. Part of an art school project although after all these years I don’t remember the brief. I do remember getting permission to take them. Nowadays there would probably have to be a healthy and safety assessment before entering such a dangerous location at night.

Wiarton Village Fair fireworks. Taken one year ago today. This year’s fireworks will be going off in around 15 hours. You get an idea of how big some of these modern commercial fireworks are when you compare them to the lights on the fun fair rides on the horizon. The photo was taken from over two miles away across Colpoy’s Bay from the dock in the village of Colpoy’s Bay.
